Big windows, a teal armchair and forty plants later, this living room feels like a greenhouse with a sofa in it, in the best way.
This room had one superpower: huge windows facing the sunrise. It was wasted on two lonely succulents. So I asked a simple question: what if the plants weren’t decoration, but the whole design?
The plan
- Height first: tall plants in the corners (a monstera, a bird of paradise, a fiddle-leaf fig) frame the windows like curtains.
- Layer the levels: floor plants, shelf plants, hanging plants. Your eye should travel up and down, not just across.
- Colour against green: a teal armchair, mustard and coral cushions, and a patterned rug make the greens look even greener.
Plant care for a sunny room
- Group plants by thirst so watering day is one route, not forty decisions.
- Rotate pots a quarter turn every week so they don’t all lean to the light.
- Use saucers and a big tray under clusters to protect the floor.
- Shade the most delicate ones with a sheer panel in high summer.
Budget
Most plants came from cuttings, swaps and the reduced shelf: about €230. Armchair (vintage, reupholstered): €180. Textiles: €90. Total: about €500.
The after
Mornings in here are ridiculous: orange sky, green leaves, coffee in hand. It’s the cheapest daily dose of joy I’ve ever bought.
